Last term, students in Years 3-6 learnt about Australian farms and how food and fibre can be produced more sustainably. All students were given the opportunity to use technology to further develop skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Students in Years 3, 4 and 5 programmed micro:bits (a pocket-sized computer) to turn a servo motor when soil moisture is low. They then worked in groups to design and build a self-watering plant system.
Year 6 students were challenged to build an automated system that could be used on a farm to improve productivity and sustainability. They worked in groups to plan their projects, then used a programmed micro:bit, sensors and servo motors to build a working prototype. Their work is currently on display in the office foyer and in this video.
